Hugh also said that it was not about what Richie did but how he did it, which makes a big difference. And, let's be serious, whatever happened, there's no way Hugh would bite the hand that feeds! The same for each and everyone of Jon's employees, it's Jon's band, it's not a democracy, he's been spending >30 years explaining it. I see this Burning Bridges compilation as a way of doing a tabula rasa from which to move on with the band as a trio. Maybe also a nod to Richie's Every Road Leads Home To You (chorus): ERLHTY is the VERY first thing I thought of when I saw Burning Bridges as the title of the album. And I had to laugh because when I Googled "Bon Jovi Burning Bridges" to see if there was any more information about availability of the album the first few pages of results were nothing but links to "Every Road" (which interestingly enough was credited in many cases to Bon Jovi, rather than Richie; perhaps because if its inclusion on some of the special releases of WAN...) I agree about Hugh's comment and David's. I think Kopper commented on JT that it sounded like all three (Jon, David, and Hugh) had been reading "our" comments and were saying the same things and they were all related to things the fans had complained about (totally paraphrasing Kopper's words). I couldn't help but think that there was probably a much more simple reason why they all said the same things. I would assume they've all been given 'talking points' regarding certain topics, as in "This is our story and we're sticking to it." As for the title of the album, there could be a third possible explanation. Maybe the band would like to burn some of the same bridges that Richie sang of burning - since we don't know what those all are. Becky has said that Jon called "The Circle" the "most Jon and Richie album since SSW". I've been listening to it a lot lately and there seem to be a LOT of the same themes on The Circle as AOTL. Maybe the bridges that are burning aren't between Jon and Richie, or the band and Richie, or Richie and anybody, for that matter. While the "burning bridges" obviously could refer to personal relationships, it might also represent changes from the way things have been done in the past, musically, politically, socially, or whatever. Or all those things. Just a thought...

The idiom "burning bridges" has been around forever. I don't think it has anything to do with Every Road's lyrics. It's just another tired, overused cliche. Anyway you cut it, if it's a reference to the situation with Richie, it doesn't seem positive to me. idioms.thefreedictionary.com/burn+bridges1. Lit. to cutoff the way back to where you came from, making it impossible to retreat. The army, which had burned its bridges behind it, couldn't go back. By blowing up the road, the spies had burned their bridges behind them.2. Fig. to act unpleasantly in a situation that you are leaving, ensuring that you'll never be welcome to return. If you get mad and quit your job, you'll be burning your bridges behind you. No sense burning your bridges. Be polite and leave quietly.3. Fig. to make decisions that cannot be changed in the future. If you drop out of school now, you'll be burning your bridges behind you. You're too young to burn your bridges that way.

Yes, of course, "burning bridges" has been around forever and is as cliché as can be, for me it's a 1971 hit song that I heard when I was a kid: and an overused line in most 1960s American WWII movies because of the appropriate double meaning of the expression. So don't misinterpret my words, please, just read what's written. I didn't write that it was "a reference to the situation with Richie" but " a nod to Richie's song" in that sense: Jon: "Hey look, Richie! I'm burning bridges too, bro! I'm doing what you sang myself too", that's why I also talked about "tabula rasa", the Latin expression is crystal clear... but probably not clear enough for some since Jackieblues also mentioned "a third possible explanation"... which happens to be the same as my theory/explanation! Now I don't seriously think that Jon remembered Richie's song when he looked for an album title (hence my "maybe"), he can't remember his own songs so how could he remember Richie's?! It's most likely just one of his beloved cliches that happened to cross his mind.

I doubt "It's most likely just one of his beloved cliches that happened to cross his mind" either. There's going to be a song with that title/lyric that has some meaning or it's a reference to the situation with Richie. There's too much in that phrase in this situation for it to be flippant.
I just don't get including a song that Richie co-wrote on the album. If it's truly the first band album without Richie, there's no way in hell I would have done that. I wouldn't have let anything associated with Richie be anywhere near the album.

It's nothing groundbreaking obviously but I kind of like the song.

Burning Bridges is a compilation of outtakes, right? In that case I think the title refers to clearing the closets so to speak, "burning the bridges" to the past and going forward as a band, not looking back. The new album due next year will then represent this new direction of the band (I don't think it will be much different though, unfortunately).

When I listen to Jon´s answer regarding Burning Bridges, I get the feeling that he´s not really happy with it. Sounds to me like something had to be released - maybe Richie still had a contract for one record.

Richie's works for Jon. He doesn't have a contract with the record company. So if Richie broke a contract with Jon, that wouldn't affect whether Jon had to release an album with anything with any Richie Sambora contribution on it (to the best of my understanding). Jon's solo albums fill his commitments to the company just as well as the band albums.
If it was a matter of Richie owing Jon a record, Jon could just slap Richie with another lawsuit with all the other lawsuits Richie's been slapped with this year. (Just a joke.)

I know that only Jon has a contract with the record company. But some kind of commitment is being fullfilled with this release. Jon has never been this uninterested about a record. So why do it? For the fans ? Releasing an album with 8 old songs is definatly less stressfull than a lawsuit.
But if it has some kind of legal reasons my guess is that this will be the last album will we get with old unreleased material/Demos.

I think it has something to do with Richie's contract that Jon can't say a lot at the moment. I don't think he's uninterested in that record or the songs that will be on it, for me he sounds like he's not allowed to say more about it at the moment. In the radio interview he did last Friday he mentioned that we should just wait and see what's on it. Which also gives me the impression that at the moment he can't say more about it or would perhaps get in trouble. I don't know how it is with contracts in the USA and if Richie can perhaps through a lawsuit at Jon if there'll be a song on it which he started writing with Jon. And then, there're the credits. It's interesting that there won't be any credits on that album. Perhaps for the same reason. In the radio interview Jon also said that he'd a lot to write off his chest. So, I think this record or the next will be very interesting lyric wise.

The thing is, Richie is the one who quit. On a show day. HE broke his contract. So if anyone owes anyone anything contractually, Richie owes Jon. I think if there was a possibility that Richie could sue Jon for including a song he co-wrote, Jon wouldn't include it. There would be no reason. We know he's written at least 25 for the next album which is plenty for this album and the 2016 release. And there are always songs Jon writes without Richie in every album cycle so there must be some leftovers from The Circle and What About Now that Richie didn't co-write.

I also think Richie owes them a lot, because of how he left them. But as nobody knows the contracts they all have when it comes to credits or such things, I thought it could perhaps be a reason why Jon is so careful with promoting Burning Bridges. John Shanks said on twitter they started writing one song with Richie which is on the album, so I thought that this was perhaps a bit of trouble. Still I'm looking forward to get the album. I'm so curious what's on it now. :-) And I'm extremely happy that Jon got up his feet again and now writes everything off his chest and wants to start new.
